God bless the life and legacy of Richard Pegue and how he touched all of our lives. I'll never forget my first "teen DJ" show that Richard prepared me to do with him on WOPA-AM, but most significantly when I became the first Program Director of the new campus radio station WIUS-FM at Western Illinois University as well as radio personality at WHEN-AM and WIUM-FM I repeatedly won The Who's Who Awards for Best Radio Personality and Best Radio Program called what else "The Best Music Of Your Life." My thanks to Richard for allowing me to use the name while making broadcasting history at WIU as the first Freshman to be awarded a Prime Time Radio show, all because of my association with Richard Pegue along with a reference letter from Abe Thompson.

I CERTAINLY would like to join you on air on Friday and Saturday and hopefully we can use these two days to celebrate Richard as well as mobilize everybody on this list and radio listeners to kick off the latest call-in campaign to Bruce Dumont and The Broadcast
Museum on the nomination of Richard Pegue in the Radio Hall of Fame!!

Who would'a thunk!
I listened to him while studying broadcasting at Columbia, and then to graduate and go to work in news room at
WGCI was a thrill. The kicker was when Dusty Radio changed to Gospel Radio 1390 and he was kicked off the air
and replaced with me! People thought I was the reason he was fired! They didn't know office politics like we did!

Well, eventually my shift went from 9 hours to 8 hours to 7 hours, to 6 hours, then 5, then finally 4 hours until they changed to gospel music! Richard worked his magic on the devil until the shift was eventually eliminated all together! Go Richard Pegue!

If people knew the real deal, they would have picketed like back in the old days! So much for radio rights!
Anywho, looking forward to the Richard Pegue Tribute! Keep up the good work! Stay on purpose, stay empowered!

“Keeping the Culture into the Future”

Kerry James Marshall is a painter, photographer, printmaker and installation artist.

His work is in major American museums and private collections, including the
Art Institute and Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago, the Whitney Museum
of American Art in New York, the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington D.C. and
the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

Kerry has been a featured artist in the
1997 Whitney Biennial, Documenta 10, and the 2000 Carnegie International.
Solo exhibitions of his work have been held at the San Francisco Museum of Modern
Art, the Brooklyn Museum of Art, NY, the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston,
and the Jack Shainman Gallery in New York.

In 1997, he was a recipient of the prestigious Mac Arthur Foundation Fellowship. The Mac Arthur fellowship (commonly known as the Genius award) is awarded each year
to a United States resident, of any age and working in any field, who show exceptional merit and promise for continued and enhanced creative work. The fellowship is not a reward for past accomplishments, but rather an investment in a person's originality, insight, and potential. He has been production designer for several independent films, including Julie Dash's acclaimed Daughters of the Dust. He lives in Chicago and teaches art at the University of Illinois, where he is a full professor.

Working Project on the Festival grounds

Kerry is working on "The Middle Passage / Diaspora / Family Tree project that will
be extended to the Festival patrons.

At least 12 million Africans were transported to the Americas during the three hundred years of the Atlantic Slave trade. This number does not include the scores of individuals who did not survive the perilous journey. We who are called African Americans, or Black Americans, are descendants of the ones who did survive. Numbers like this are staggering. They remain only statistics, though, unless a face, or a body makes them all too human. Only then does the gravity of the enterprise become fully comprehensible.

I have begun a project to put faces with the numbers. The goal is to produce as many, individual, portrait medallions as possible in my lifetime. Each portrait will be added to in installation that serves as a commemorative family tree. The accumulative approach is like that of the NKisi , or nail fetish sculptures of the Congo. Festival patrons are invited to have their picture taken for the "Black Family Tree". A copy of the medallion will be available to everybody that participates.

A store that offers fathers for those who don’t have them has just opened in Chicago,
where anyone of the female species may go to choose a father.

Among the instructions at the entrance is a description of how the store operates:

WELCOME TO THE Father Store!!

You may visit the store ONLY ONCE!
There are six floors and the attributes of the men increase as the shopper ascends the flights.
There is, however, a catch... ! You may choose any man from a particular floor, or you may choose to go up floor, but you cannot go back down except to exit the building!

Happy Shopping!!!!

A woman goes to the Father Store to find a father
On the first floor the sign on the door reads:

Floor 1: These fathers have children and take care of them.
If you’re looking for a man who loves children, this is a good choice.

The second floor sign reads:
Floor 2: These fathers have children, but are not with the mother, who has the children,
but he still takes care of them. This is a good choice also.

The third floor sign reads:
Floor 3: These fathers are single parent fathers, and looking for a woman with children to make blended family. Great choice!

"Wow," she says, these are great choices, but I don’t want to stop here, there may be something better! She goes to the fourth floor and sign reads:

Floor 4: These men are fathers with no children and looking for women with no children.
They are very good looking, sensitive and patient.

"Oh, My God!" she says to herself, "I can’t do this alone! I need help!
Too many good choices. Still, she goes to the fifth floor and sign reads:

Floor 5: These fathers look like Denzel, Samuel L. Jackson and
Richard Gere all rolled up into one.
They are simply drop-dead fine, love to help with the housework, homework
and massaging your feet!
Did I mention they are all very romantic?
They love to give flowers, write love letters, work long hard hours just to give
you and the kids everything you need and desire.

A woman never satisfied, she has to try the last floor because if it gets better than this,
she has to know about it.

After she reaches the last floor, the sixth floor, the sign reads:

Floor 6:
You are visitor 20, 130, 214 to this floor.

There are NO fathers on this floor.
They are all on the first five levels.
This floor exists solely as proof that most women think they know what they want,
but maybe not really sure due to what eveyone tells us what we want, desire,
deserve, etc. We really don’t know what we want,
thereby making it hard to please a woman with or without children.

So please be very grateful for the father in your life!
At least he’s there and you don’t have to go looking for him.
And if you do have to go looking for him, you probably know where he is.
If you can’t find him, spend some time with yourself, so when the right man/father/father figure shows up in your life, you can appreciate him on whatever level he’s on.

Britain's Brainiest Family is Black

Paula and Peter Imafidon are just like any other 9-year-olds.
They love laughing, playing on the computer and fighting
with each other.

What sets these twins apart from their peers, though, is that they are, hands down, prodigies who are about to enter high school and make British history as the youngest to do so.

The precocious London-based tykes, known as the "Wonder Twins," floored academics a year ago when they aced University of Cambridge's advanced mathematics exam.

They are the youngest students to ever pass the test.

The future little scholars' father, Chris, and mother, Ann, immigrated to Britain from Nigeria more than 30 years ago and have actually been down this prodigy route before with their three older children, who are also overachievers.

The couple's oldest daughter, Anne-Marie, is now 20, but at age 13, she won a British government scholarship to take undergraduate courses at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore.

Christiana, 17, their other daughter, is the youngest student ever to study at the undergraduate level in any British University at the age of 11.

Youngest daughter, Samantha, now 12, passed two rigorous high school level mathematics and statistics exams at the age of 6. She mentored the twins
to pass their own math secondary school test when they were also 6.

Even with all of this, the proud dad denies that there is any particular genius in his family. He does credit his children's success to the Excellence in Education program for disadvantaged inner-city youth.

"Every child is a genius," he said.
"Once you identify the talent of a child and put them in the environment that will nurture that talent, then the sky is the limit.

Look at Tiger Woods or the Williams sisters -- they were nurtured.
You can never rule anything out with them.
The competition between the two of them makes them excel in anything they do."

The darling duo are competitive to say the least, and this is what fuels them to out-achieve each other. Paula said,
"I am excited to pass, but I should have got higher than Peter."

As far as career paths Paula says she wants to be a math teacher, while Peter aspires to be prime minister one day.

Washington Post Staff Writer

PORT-AU-PRINCE, HAITI -- International relief organizations backed by American soldiers delivered hundreds of tons of rice to homeless residents of the Haitian capital Sunday, laboring to ease a food shortage that has left countless thousands struggling to find enough to eat.

But even as food-aid workers enjoyed their most successful day since the Jan. 12 earthquake, the increasingly prominent role of U.S. troops and civilians in the capital is creating high expectations that the Obama administration is struggling to contain.

The needs are extraordinary, and the common refrain is that the Americans will provide.

"I want the Americans to take over the country. The Haitian government can't do anything for us," said Jean-Louis Geffrard, a laborer who lives under a tarp in the crowded square. "When we tell the government we're hungry, the government says, 'We're hungry, too.' "

Added Canga Matthieu, a medical student whose school was destroyed: "The American government should take care of us."

"They're well organized. The United States is the richest country in the world, and they can help."

But help has its limits, U.S. officials emphasize in their public statements and in their interactions with Haitians. "You will have a friend and partner in the United States of America today and going forward," President Obama said the day after the earthquake. But U.S. officials here make it clear that the American government is not responsible for rebuilding the ravaged country.

"The military forces . . . are not here to do any reconstruction. That is not our mission," said Col. Rick Kaiser, a U.S. Army engineer overseeing emergency repairs to the Port-au-Prince docks, the electrical and water systems, and other battered infrastructure in the hemisphere's poorest country.

Administration officials, including Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, describe virtually every activity here as "Haiti-led," although the government is barely functioning and its record was checkered even before the earthquake killed more than 110,000 people and leveled an array of government ministries.

Louis Lucke, the senior U.S. Agency for International Development official in Haiti, stood in an American-run medical complex Saturday with President René Préval and told reporters that "the Haitians are leading the process in all the areas that are necessary" -- including food distribution, despite strong evidence to the contrary.

U.S. officials are doing what they can to bolster the stature of Préval and Prime Minister Jean-Max Bellerive and to promote international assistance efforts for the more-daunting work that lies ahead. In the meantime, they are deploying personnel to support projects from food delivery to the erection of a temporary hospital near Port-au-Prince.

Sgt. 1st Class Jason Jacot, an Army engineer, drove to a critical power station in the Delmas neighborhood Sunday morning to assess repairs made by Haitian and Dominican workers.

Markestre Theolien, a supervisor with Haiti Electricity, the national utility, lamented the condition of the 27-year-old transformers and asked for new ones. Asked where the help should come from, he smiled and said, "U.S.A."

"So they're expecting us to take over?" Jacot asked a translator. "No, no, no. How can we assist without completely rebuilding? We're not here to rebuild."

The discussion went back and forth cordially. Jacot said he would be talking with the utility's director to learn what was needed. Theolien defined his bottom line: "What we really want is the United States to rebuild it, to modernize."

U.S. soldiers, whose numbers within Haiti have risen to 6,500, played a central role in Sunday's food distributions, working alongside U.N. peacekeepers to prevent the pushing, shoving and occasional melees that have severely hampered deliveries. Where U.S. troops have been present in recent days, relief workers say, deliveries have gone smoothly.

By day's end, the U.N. World Food Program calculated that roughly 400 metric tons of rice had been delivered to nine sites. Five more locations will be running early in the week, a spokesman said, but increased gang violence in the Cité Soleil slums made deliveries too risky.

The generally smooth deliveries on Sunday, based on a new system of ration cards, were met with pleasure at the Place du Canape Vert, an impromptu settlement where several hundred families received large sacks marked "Product of USA" or "USA Best Rice." Yet some asked when there would be something more than rice, while others wanted to know why they were left out.

Deliveries will resume Monday as the World Food Program, bolstered by an $80 million U.S. contribution, seeks to reach 2 million people in the next two weeks. The agency hopes the system will lead to distribution of other badly needed food and relief supplies.

At the ramshackle encampment, some residents were boiling water for rice within an hour of the delivery. Some had beans or root vegetables to add, and a few had meat. Those who could afford neither complained that rice alone would not be enough.

"It's there, but we can do nothing with it. We only got rice. No oil, nothing. And it's not easy to find water," said Flore Laurent, who is eight months pregnant. But she had nothing but praise for the role of the American soldiers. "I vote for the help of the U.S., 100 percent."

A throng of people in the square discussed their lack of faith in Haitian authorities. One after another, they said their only hope is the United States.

"The Haitian government has been here for a while, and they give us nothing. The United States should take over the country," said Andrelita Laguerre, shepherding four children and a grandchild at the camp. "Most of my friends expect the United States to take over. I wish!"

It was so exciting to see Ms. Lalah up close and personal, especially after hearing her on my dvd player for years. I was riding a train from NYC back to Chicago some years ago and stopped at the concession stand to get something to eat. The counter attended was on break and was listening to jazz, that I simply love! I asked him who it was, and he said Lalah and Joe? (forgot his last name)

He let me listen to it for a minute, and I vowed to get it once I got home. And I did. Today, I still don't know where that CD is, (that's what happen when you become attached to something!) but I cherish that ride home and cherish this interview.

The Link & Option Center Debuts Live Talk Show on CAN-TV21
“The Community Link Live Talk Show” airs Fridays through April 1

The Link & Option Center (TLOC), a non-profit human services organization that services
at-risk children, adolescents and their families in Chicago and south suburban Cook County,
is pleased to announce the debut of its live, call-in program, The Community Link Live
Talk Show, airing Friday, Jan. 8 on CAN TV21.

For the next 13 weeks The Community Link Live Talk Show will air every Friday at 4 p.m.
and feature special guests including community leaders, local government officials, and staff
and students from TLOC. Ms. Twin Green, founding President and CEO of TLOC,
will be the show’s first guest.

“This talk show is just one way we can communicate TLOC’s mission to a wider audience
and showcase our programs to families who may not be familiar with us,” said Ms. Twin Green,
founding President and CEO of The Link & Option Center. “Through our organization, we hope
to provide children and their families with progressive opportunities for learning, mentoring,
academic support and vocational training.”

Ms. Green founded TLOC in 1995 in response to the struggles her 8-year old son was experiencing
in school. His lack of focus and direction, due to the separation between he and his father, was
taking him down a negative path filled with failing grades and delinquency. As she worked with
her son, she discovered that this was what she was meant to do: to inspire and help unfocused
youth to stay in school, rise above their situations and strive to achieve their fullest potential.

“While helping my son and other youth in similar situations, I saw a growing need for structured,
academic tutoring in the community,” said Ms. Green. “Eventually, the needs of the community led
The Link & Option Center to expand its programming from providing only educational support
to offering mentoring services, family-centered referral services, computer training, an alternative
to school suspension program, anger management, 6th District Court diversion, and Juvenile Justice
mental health counseling.

The Community Link Live Talk Show’s format will focus on programming and services The Link
& Option Center provides to the community, which includes: Excel Beyond the Bell (tutoring program);
Alternative to School Suspension and Intervention; TeenREACH After School Program; Mentoring;
Mental Health Juvenile Justice Counseling; Mentoring Children of Prisoners/Caregivers Choice;

Jeffrey Haas tells a story that many of us have long waited to read. His book, The Assassination of Fred Hampton: How the FBI and the Chicago Police Murdered a Black Panther (Lawrence Hill Books, November), is a much-needed corrective to a badly distorted mainstream narrative of a key event in the history of the left and African-American politics of the late ’60s. Haas reveals just how deeply the Nixon Justice Department was involved in the Chicago police raid on December 4, 1969, that killed Black Panther Party leaders Fred Hampton and Mark Clark. Hampton headed the Panthers’ Chicago branch and Clark the Peoria, Ill., branch.

It is now clear that Hampton and Clark were victims of a plot hatched by the FBI and executed by the Cook County State’s Attorney and Chicago police officers. Nonetheless, conventional wisdom portrays the Panthers as the villains. In 2006, Chicago’s City Council, under pressure from the Fraternal Order of Police, voted down a routine city ordinance to name the block on which Hampton’s murder took place in his honor.

The accumulation of facts presented in Haas’ book portrays Chicago police as all too willing to violate the constitutional rights of Panther members and supporters. He reveals the cynical treachery of State Attorney Edward Hanrahan, whose office planned the raid under the direction of J. Edgar Hoover’s Counterintelligence Program (COINTELPRO). Haas also provides a damning portrayal of one obstinate judge’s continued attempts to thwart the legal process.

But Haas also offers captivating details that add color and context to those turbulent times. He evokes the infectious spirit of change and activism that infused so many idealistic young Americans during the hallowed ’60s. His accounts of growing up Jewish and middle-class in Atlanta, Ga., help locate the source of his unconventional political leanings. Haas’ grandfather, for example, was an attorney for Leo Frank, a Jewish factory owner who was lynched in Georgia after being wrongly accused of murdering a teenage girl. His father was deeply involved in the civil rights movement in the South. Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.), an icon of that movement, wrote the eulogy for his father’s funeral.

Haas’ forebears held radical positions for Southern whites, and it seems Haas was simply following ancestral footsteps when he aligned himself with the emergent black radical movement of the 1960s. Although many thought it unusual for an attorney with University of Chicago credentials to eschew wealth and status to associate with black radicals, it was a natural move for Haas.

His accounts of the life at the U of C law school, where he met a “persuasive” Bernardine Dohrn, who would become the leader of the Weathermen faction of Students for a Democratic Society, evoke a period infused with political passions. At that time, Dohrn chaired a group that sent law students to the South for summer jobs with civil rights lawyers. Haas was sent to his home, Atlanta.

“I had to go to Chicago to take my first steps to confront segregation where I grew up,” he writes. Though easily parodied, the earnest idealism of those days provoked real change. Haas’ volume reminds us how important naïve and optimistic students were to toppling barriers of segregation in the South.

Back in Chicago, after passing the bar and while defending suspects arrested during the violence that erupted following the 1968 assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Haas met a like-minded attorney named Dennis Cunningham. They formed a friendship and partnership, and in 1969 they joined with two other lawyers to open the People’s Law Office, which has since gained an international reputation for conscientiously defending victims of overzealous law enforcement.

Haas also provides some historical context for the rise of the Black Panther Party, a group started in 1966 by college students Huey P. Newton and Bobby Seale to address issues of police brutality in their hometown of Oakland, Calif. Seale and Newton decided to form an organization of armed volunteers to confront abusive police officers directly. At the time, it was still legal to brandish unconcealed weapons in California.

The idea that African-Americans could physically resist police mistreatment was very attractive to urban black youth of that era. I was one of them. And, like me, many had grown weary of watching nonviolent protesters for civil rights endure humiliating beatings at the hands of police.

The Black Panther Party’s disciplined audacity offered black youth an alternative that resonated with the militant tenor of the times. Although the group embraced a quasi-Marxist ideology and provocatively challenged police authority, it spread like wildfire—mostly in the urban north. Their urgent sense of commitment to social justice permanently altered the street-gang culture of urban America.

The first Panther office opened in Chicago in November 1968. Fred Hampton, a charismatic 20-year-old who formerly led the Maywood, Ill., NAACP youth chapter, was given the leadership role by Bobby Rush, now an Illinois congressman, but then the Defense Minister of the Illinois Black Panthers. Haas gives us one of the few accounts of Hampton’s life outside of his connection to the Panthers. Hampton grew up in Chicago’s southern suburbs, the third child of Louisiana immigrants Francis and Iberia Hampton.

The true strength of this book is Haas’ meticulous reconstruction of the particulars that led to the partial victory (the plaintiffs received a $1.85 million settlement, although the government admitted no wrongdoing) and legal vindication of the People’s Law Office. He details how the FBI, the Cook County State’s Attorney’s office and the Chicago police conspired to assassinate Fred Hampton and Mark Clark. He clearly reveals, for example, how COINTELPRO, which sought to “neutralize” black leaders, provided motivation for the Hampton murder. The book’s exhaustive account of this incident is one of the few investigations to explore the Hampton assassination. This is odd because many strands of U.S. history converge at this point. The FBI’s COINTELPRO program, uncovered in 1973 by the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, chaired by Idaho Senator Frank Church, sought to “prevent the rise of a messiah who could unify and electrify the militant Black Nationalist movement.” That FBI directive helps us understand just how deeply the federal government feared the Black Panthers and someone like Fred Hampton. A popular leader with great potential, Hampton embodied the electrifying appeal of the Black Panther Party among a certain segment of black youth.

In retrospect, it’s clear that Hoover’s designation of the Panthers as “the greatest threat to the internal security of the country” provided law enforcement with a virtual license to kill. What’s more, the reckless bravado of the Panthers often provided police a convenient pretext.

Haas’ important book clarifies how the racial paranoia of an out-of-touch federal government produced a deceitful policy that trashed constitutional rights even as it ignored legitimate grievances.

This book should alter the conventional wisdom that the Panthers were a dangerous threat that the police had to eliminate at all costs. Haas reveals that the cost was much too high.

I know it's the first of the year and you say why am I writing the last blog of the year. I cannot write for 5 blogs and retain my sanity so I am compiling all blogs in one! See new one at end of this article.

I had the pleasure of filming this event behind the scenes at my alma mater Martin Luther King Jr. High School with students. It was so much fun seeing some of the old teachers, the hallway memories, etc.

What was even more fun was seeing how the students reacted to us as alumni, calling us Ms. Robinson and Ms. Tyson (Sister who wrote the lyrics and music for the song) and seeing the looks on our faces was priceless.

Congratulations on the King H.S. band going to perform at the inauguration of President Barack Obama! Until then, set those Tivo's and VCR's, Sundays at Midnight on Channel 19 to see the King H.S. Band perform the Obama Song on ZTV!

As part of my responsibilities as Traffic Reporter at CLTV, I read this every Sunday, and still get calls asking the SAME QUESTION! Can I park on main city streets even if it's NO SNOW OUTSIDE ON THE STREET?

It's cold outside and I know you want to get home where it's warm and watch your favorite tv show, but remember NOT TO PARK ON CITY STREETS designated routes from 3 to 7 a.m. daily until April 1.

Vehicles parked on designated streets will be ticketed and towed REGARDLESS of whether there is snow on the ground.

Ignoring seasonal restriction signs would cost violators a minimum $150 towing fee, a $50 ticket and a daily storage fee of $10 that will increase over time, the department's Web site says.

A separate ban forbids drivers from leaving vehicles on designated main streets when there is at least 2 inches of snow. SO THE ANSWER IS NO! YOU CAN NOT PARK! Move your car or be towed! Don't call me when they tow you, call the auto pound! 311!

It may say something about the state of American television that there is one more black president-elect of the United States than there are black actors with individual lead roles in a network television drama.

But after years of ensemble dramas sprinkled with nonwhite supporting actors, the excitement surrounding the election of Barack Obama could help to open doors for more minorities in leading dramatic roles, executives from television production studios said.

Ben Silverman, the co-chairman of NBC Entertainment who oversees the network’s television studio, said that he and the head of the diversity initiative for NBC Universal, Paula Madison, have been pushing for projects starring minorities.

Mr. Silverman said, “We were going after this regardless, but I don’t think you can deny the power that Barack Obama brings in magnifying this direction in our world.” He added, “We’ve all been colorblind for years, but the results don’t necessarily match up to our intentions.”

Ms. Madison said that NBC’s approach was at least as much about business as about social responsibility. “People are not living in single-race silos anymore,” she said. “We said, ‘Let’s try to develop a world that looks like the world we’re living in.’ ”

The evidence seems to indicate that race neutrality has not produced a surge of black lead performers, at least in network dramas. While comedies with black characters have been something of a network staple — from the much vilified “Amos ’n Andy” in the early days of television, through shows like “Sanford and Son” with Redd Foxx, “The Jeffersons,” and Martin Lawrence’s sitcom “Martin” — historically, blacks in lead television drama roles have been rare.

Bill Cosby, whose 1980s hit sitcom revitalized that genre after a period of decline, famously broke through in drama as the co-star of “I Spy” in 1965. He won three Emmy awards in the role of Alexander Scott, an espionage agent. Exactly two black actors (and no actresses) have won Emmy awards for drama series since: James Earl Jones, who played the title role in the short-lived “Gabriel’s Fire” in 1991, and Andre Braugher, who was part of the ensemble in “Homicide” in 1998.

Dennis Haysbert, who played President David Palmer on the Fox series “24,” is featured in the CBS ensemble drama “The Unit” (produced by Mr. Newman’s Fox studio). Also this season, the venerable NBC drama “ER” added Angela Bassett; executives at its studio, Warner Brothers, now identify her as the lead in that show.

But both “ER” and “The Unit” are ensemble shows, a genre that has for decades — going back to performers like Michael Warren in “Hill Street Blues” and Denzel Washington in “St. Elsewhere” — been the route for black drama actors to break through.

“ER” has featured black actors (including Eriq La Salle) since its inception in 1994. ABC’s “Grey’s Anatomy,” whose creator and executive producer, Shonda Rhimes, is black, has similarly offered a notably diverse cast.

But there is no dramatic series spotlighting a single star — like “House” on Fox, “Chuck” on NBC, “Eli Stone” on ABC or “The Mentalist” on CBS — now led by a black actor. Hispanic actors have fared somewhat better. Jimmy Smits has starred in several series, and America Ferrera is now the star of “Ugly Betty.”

Cable’s recent list of single-star dramas is also notable for its roster of white stars, including shows like “The Shield,” “The Closer,” “Saving Grace,” “Dexter,” “Monk,” “Burn Notice,” “Breaking Bad” and “Damages.”

Tim Reid, who was the star and an executive producer of the Emmy-winning comedy series “Frank’s Place” for CBS in the 1987-88 season — and who recently wrote, with the white comic Tom Dreesen, “Tim and Tom: An American Comedy in Black and White” about their days as a stand-up team — has been outspoken about the continued limited opportunities for minorities in television.

“If the president-elect should have any positive influence over the so-called liberal base of Hollywood, it will be by focusing their attention on the reality of the kind of multicultural world we actually live in,” Mr. Reid said in an e-mail message. “This doesn’t just mean putting another person of color in front of the camera, but giving them an equal opportunity in having a say-so in what is created for the camera.”

“In my opinion,” he continued, “we’re far more likely to have a black president in my lifetime ... oh, yeah ... I can stop saying that now.”

The most significant hiring of a black actor for a television series has been long in the works: next month the film star Laurence Fishburne will assume the lead in CBS’s biggest hit show, “CSI.” That move was not connected to the ascendance of Mr. Obama, though CBS and studio executives expressed hope that the timing would help in the transition from William Petersen, the current “CSI” lead, to Mr. Fishburne.

David Stapf, president of the CBS Paramount Network Television studio, which produces “CSI,” said of Mr. Fishburne’s selection: “If you have a chance to get an actor like that, you go for him. It wouldn’t matter what ethnicity he is.”

Paramount also has a deal in place to find a project for the rap star L L Cool J.

NBC Universal said it has a number of projects in the works tailored for blacks, including development deals with the director Antoine Fuqua (“Training Day”) and the actor and writer Ice Cube.

Among shows already in production, Mr. Silverman cited the buddy comedy “Off Duty,” with Bradley Whitford, who is white, and Romany Malco, who is black. The network also has a thriller script from Frank Spotnitz, the “X Files” writer and producer, with Gabrielle Union, a black actress, signed to star.

And NBC Universal announced with some fanfare “Making Friends With Black People,” a sitcom that is to star the author of the book of the same title, the comedian Nick Adams.

If these projects are only tangentially tied to the arrival of a black star in the leading political role in America, Gary Newman, co-chairman of the Twentieth Century Fox television studio, suggested another potential influence stemming from the election of Mr. Obama.

“We may see more chances taken on comedies that feel more hopeful rather than the sarcastic, cynical style we’ve seen a lot of recently,” Mr. Newman said. “The Obama success seems to have put people more in touch with their more hopeful side.”

Is History Siding With Obama’s Economic Plan?

CLEARLY, there are major differences between the economic policies of Senators Barack Obama and John McCain.
Mr. McCain wants more tax cuts for the rich; Mr. Obama wants tax cuts for the poor and middle class. The two men
also disagree on health care, energy and many other topics.

Such differences are hardly surprising. Democrats and Republicans have followed different approaches to the economy
for as long as there have been Democrats and Republicans. Longer, actually. Remember Hamilton versus Jefferson?

Many Americans know that there are characteristic policy differences between the two parties. But few are aware of
two important facts about the post-World War II era, both of which are brilliantly delineated in a new book, “Unequal
Democracy,” by Larry M. Bartels, a professor of political science at Princeton. Understanding them might help voters
see what could be at stake, economically speaking, in November.

I call the first fact the Great Partisan Growth Divide. Simply put, the United States economy has grown faster, on average,
under Democratic presidents than under Republicans.

The stark contrast between the whiz-bang Clinton years and the dreary Bush years is familiar because it is so recent. But
while it is extreme, it is not atypical. Data for the whole period from 1948 to 2007, during which Republicans occupied
the White House for 34 years and Democrats for 26, show average annual growth of real gross national product of
1.64 percent per capita under Republican presidents versus 2.78 percent under Democrats.

That 1.14-point difference, if maintained for eight years, would yield 9.33 percent more income per person, which is a
lot more than almost anyone can expect from a tax cut.

Such a large historical gap in economic performance between the two parties is rather surprising, because presidents have

Why Safe Kids Are Becoming Fat Kids

Just when we thought playgrounds were accident-proof -- no more merry-go-rounds, high slides, jungle gyms, seesaws or pretty much anything that's fun -- it turns out that safety itself can be dangerous. A recent heat wave in New York exposed a new playground risk: The ubiquitous rubber safety matting gets hot, not as hot as McDonald's coffee, but hot enough to scald tender feet.

The outrage was immediate. "Playgrounds should be designed with canopies," one park- safety advocate declared. "How many burn cases will it take," Betsy Gotbaum, the city's public advocate asked, "before the city wakes up and acts?"

The headlong drive for safety has indeed created dangers, but not those identified by the safety zealots. Risk is important in child development. Allowing children to test their limits in unstructured play, according to the American Association of Pediatrics, "develop[s] their imagination, dexterity, and physical, cognitive, and emotional strength." Scrapes and bruises are how children learn their limits, and the need to take personal responsibility.

The harmful effects of our national safety obsession ripple outward into society. One in six children in America is obese, and many of them will face a lifetime of chronic illness. According to the Center for Disease Control, this problem would basically cure itself if children engaged in the informal outdoor activities that used to be normal. But how do we lure children off the sofa? One key attraction is risk.

Risk is fun, at least the moderate risks that were common in prior generations. An informal survey of children by the University of Toronto's Institute of Child Studies found that "merry-go-rounds . . . anecdotally the most hated piece of playground equipment in hospital emergency rooms -- topped the list of most desired bits of playground equipment." Those of us of a certain age can remember sprinting to get the contraption really moving. That was fun. And a lot of exercise.

America unfortunately is going in the opposite direction. There is nothing left in playgrounds that would attract the interest of a child over the age of four. Exercise in schools is carefully programmed, when it exists at all. Some schools have banned tag. Broward County, Fla., banned running at recess. (How else can we guard against a child falling down?) Little Leagues forbid sliding into base. Some towns ban sledding. High diving boards are history, and it's only a matter of time before all diving boards disappear.

Safety is meaningful only in the context of other benefits and risks. Safety always involves trade-offs -- of opportunities, of scarce resources and, especially in the case of children's play, of learning to manage risk. The question is whether the trade-off makes sense. Soft rubber matting will cushion any fall. This is probably a good thing, at least in situations where children may fall on their heads. But rubber matting also gets hot.

There's only one solution. Someone on behalf of society must be authorized to make these choices. Courts must honor those decisions. Otherwise, the pious accusations of safety fanatics, empowered by the nearly universal fear of being sued, will guarantee a cultural spiral downwards toward the lowest common denominator.

For America's children today, that means spending more than six hours per day staring at a screen. Is that the way we want our children to grow up?

"A little common sense goes a long way," observed Adrian Benepe, New York City's parks commissioner. "Children should wear shoes. They're foolproof protection against hot surfaces." Shoes have undeniable virtues in an urban setting -- a small but useful lesson for young children.

I have an additional idea as well. Why not replant a few of the trees that were cut down, or radically pruned, in an effort to create a controlled play environment? The shade from the trees would keep the rubber matting a little cooler. Who knows, maybe we would even allow children to climb them.

I remember seeing Bernie Mac for the first time a few years ago in Chicago. It wasn’t at a comedy club, or at the infamous “The Kings of Comedy” concert. Bernie was taking care of some business at City Hall. I was there visiting one of my aunts who is a police officer and who happened to know Bernie pretty well.

I can still see this tall figure of a man standing before me…not as “Dollar Bill” or the dude from “Bad Santa”…he was a regular person, who on this day was dressed in bright yellow from head to toe! And he was a chocolate brotha, so you couldn’t have missed him either way even if you tried! For some reason I didn’t find it necessary to ask for an autograph or for a picture. I decided to let the man go about his normal activities; and how refreshing was it to see him running his own errands. By this time, he certainly could’ve paid someone to take care of what ever it was that needed to be done. I remember him being very congenial-a regular person just like you and me.

I’m not writing this necessarily as a tribute to Bernie Mac. I like most of you reading this, is a fan of his work…I thought he was the funniest of the comics in “The Kings of Comedy” concert! And his performances in “Bad Santa” and in “The Playa’s Club”…classic! So when I heard about Mr. McCullough’s transition, a feeling of gratitude simply came over me. I remember feeling so blessed that Bernard Jeffrey McCullough decided that his dreams were larger than the Wonder Bread truck that he used to drive for a living. I was so grateful that Bernie knew that his talents far exceeded the Chicago city limits and the Illinois state line. I remember thinking how blessed this one man was to have fulfilled his dreams within a relatively short space of time.

So, my question is this: How many of us need to take a page from Bernie’s book? How many of us right now are not living our lives to its fullest potential? How many of us are driving delivery trucks when we should be writing scripts, singing on Broadway, and dancing at Radio City Music Hall? How many of us have dreams that far exceed the “reasonable person standard”, but “reason”, “common sense”, “the bills”, and the constant peanut gallery from friends and family chiding you, “Chile you betta hold on to that good job you got!” Or, how about you’re almost ready to make that jump, but you read the newspaper and it tells you that the economy is headed into a recession, the national deficit is $9 trillion, and foreclosure rates are ballooning constantly.

Some of the most admired American companies in existence today open their doors when the US economy had already taken, or was about to take a nose dive. Those business leaders believed in themselves and their business model rather than “the odds.” Many of them probably asked themselves, “If not now, then when?” The same goes for any successful person that you may presently admire. I’m sure Bill Cosby, Oprah, and Bill Gates didn’t sit around and plan when would be a good time to live their best life... 'No day, but today.”

I empower you (and myself) to stop waiting for the right time. The right time is always today. Now let the record reflect…I’m not telling you to quit your job or to mortgage yours and your family’s future on dreams that are not well thought out. You need a plan, but above all, you need to put God first and ask Him to guide your path. You are already divinely guided in all of your ways; you must take instruction from Him as it relates to your life’s purpose. You can do it, but only if you want it (whatever “it” may be for you!)

I extend my thoughts and prayers to the McCullough family; unlike many other celebrities who achieve fame and fortune, Bernie remained authentic and devoted to his family.

I’m so proud of Bernie Mac for having the courage to follow his dreams. He made us laugh, even barrel over in tears because of his unique style, facial expressions, and ability to say what many of us thought, but would never dare utter. It’s simply amazing to think that one slightest bit of apprehension on his part, many years ago while driving that Wonder Bread truck and the world would have gotten to know and love Bernard (Bernie Mac) McCullough.

To The Editor: As a 78 year old American of African descent, I feel compelled to respond to all this 'much ado about nothing' when it comes to the statement that Michelle Obama made about the fact that this is the first time in her adult life that she has been proud to be an American.

The country needs to hear this from the Black perspective. Long before I was born, my grandfather Joseph Burleson, owned a considerable amount of land in oil rich Texas. Because during that era, Blacks could not vote, nor could they contest anything in the courts of the United States, my grandfather's land was STOLEN by his White neighbor. My grandfather, who was literate and better educated than my grandmother, drove to town. Seeing my grandfather leave, the covetous neighbor asked my grandmother to show him the deed to the property. He snatched it.

She could not insist that he give it back, nor could she have reported this THEFT to the sheriff because of the fact that Blacks had no rights in the 1800's. The prevailing law at that time was he who held the deed owned the land. Do you think that is something that I am PROUD OF? Right now I should be living off the oil and gas royalties.< /SPAN& gt; In 1934 when my dad drove us to Texas to meet his family, when he stopped to purchase gasoline, his daughters and wife were not allowed to use the washroom. As a man it was easier for his to relieve himself in the bushes, but not for the females.

We were, however, reduced to having to go in the bushes, also. Do you think I am PROUD OF THAT? In 1938 when my oldest sister went to enroll in Hyde Park High School, she was told by the counselor that she did not want to take college preparatory courses, she wanted to study domestic science. Do you think I'm PROUD OF THAT? Of course, when Beatrice Lillian Hurley-Burleson went to school the next day, that was the last time anyone thought that the Burleson girls wanted to study domestic science. When in 1943 my parents attempted to buy the 2 flat at 5338 South Kenwood, where we had lived since 1933, in Hyde Park, Chicago, IL we were told that we could not buy it because there was a restrictive covenant that said that the property was never to be sold to 'Negroes.'

Do you think I am PROUD OF THAT? In 1950 when I graduated from college, I was unable to get a job because I was considered 'overqualified.' the code word for they would not hire me because of my race. All of the want ads called for Japanese Americans or Neisis ( the word given to Japanese Americans at that time). Do you think that was something that I should have been PROUD OF? I understood that America was trying to make up for the interring of innocent and patriotic Americans who were our enemy by association. My cousin's barbershop was bombed in Mississippi in the 50's because he was encouraging Black people to register to vote. His wife who had earned a Masters Degree from Northwestern University lost her position as the principal of the local school because of the voter registration activities.

Is that something I should be PROUD OF? Now we get to Rev. Jeremiah Wright, the pastor of the Obama family. Rev. Wright like so many religious zealots overstates many things, which many of his members do not agree. To suggest that Senator Obama should leave the church of his choice is not only a double standard, but it is absurd. Would any of the talking heads who are so alarmed by Rev. Wright's thoughts and speeches suggest that Catholics should abandon their faith or denounce and reject the Pope because so many priests have molested children? These children were exploited and taken advantage of and they had no choice to even know they could resist, reject and denounce.

To me the situations are parallel, except for the fact that the priests' behavior is a physical violation of the innocence of children who are marred for life; and the priests' beha vior is a crime. Rev. Wright's speeches are just words, that one can listen to or not, the members have a choice. Should Governor Romney denounce and reject the Mormon Church because some of their members practice polygamy? As Senator Obama has previously stated, we have entered the silly season. Barack Obama is an adult, and most importantly, he is an exceptionally intelligent adult. Like most of us adults, fortunately, we do not accept all we hear or see.

If we did, the world would be more amoral, debased and perverted than the world of today is. I see all these 'so called' ponderings an attempt to marginalize the candidacy of Senator Barack Obama. I cannot truly call this racism because some ignorant Blacks have also spoken disparagingly about him. I accept this as the darker side of mankind who because of their own inadequacies, they project their deficiencies on others. Barack Obama is a very rare individual, the likes of whom the world seldom sees. Like most geniuses, they are often misunderstood. They are objects of envy and jealousy.

They are suspect because they soar above the average man who does not have the intellectual ability to understand the greatness of special people. They are also targets to be pulled down to the level of the mediocre that cannot stand to see an individual with deep convictions and high standards. We have not seen a phenomenon like Barack Obama in many years and many generations. Like Gandhi, like Jesus, like Einstein, like Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., like Mother Theresa, genetically, intellectually and spiritually, these people offer the world so much, but they are often maligned and misunderstood.

Barack Obama is a Christian in the true sense of the word. A true Christian loves his fellow man unconditionally. A true Christian wants the best and tries to bring out the best in his fellow man. A true Christian wants to unite and bring the world together in peace and harmony. This is what Senator Obama stands for; but, unfortunately, he has had to get off point to answer these false charges, innuendoes, and just plain lies. We are in the presence of an angel unaware in Senator Barack Obama; and this country needs him, more than he needs us. He is the only person at this time in history that can restore respect for America with the worlds' people.

Because of his family background, the influence of his beloved mother who instilled great values in him, the influence of his absent father who vicariously inspired a son to go to Harvard as the father had done, the influence of a minister who brought him to an understanding of the value and meaning of Christianity, the influence of a brilliant Harvard educated wife who inspires him and keeps him grounded; he is the epitome of a citizen of the world. He is of the world because the world is in him; and this is what America needs to bring us o ut of the abyss to which w e have sunk in the eyes of the world.

Like, Michelle Obama, after living in this country all of my 78 years, loving my country and not understanding why my country has not loved me, I now for the first time in my adult life feel PROUD OF MY COUNTRY because I sense a maturing, a recognition of talent and character, and not color, and a field of candidates aspiring to lead this nation coming from very diverse backgrounds of gender, religious beliefs, national origin, ethnicity, age and experiences. This to me is the HOPE that America is coming into her own and will begin to CHANGE and will embrace the philosophy upon which this country was founded, where all men are created equal and are entitled to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

Gov. Blagojevich announces 10,000 summer jobs for youth across the state Starting in early July Summer Youth Works puts young people to work to improve their communities
CHICAGO - Governor Rod R. Blagojevich today announced Summer Youth Works 2008, a program that provides young people from communities throughout Illinois summer employment. This summer, the program will provide summer jobs for up to 10,000 youth helping them to establish productive work habits while investing in their communities. The Summer Youth Works initiative will provide jobs focused on community service, community and highway beautification, job training programs and pre-professional training such as working with highway engineering firms.

“Summer jobs gave me the opportunity to work and be engaged in positive activities as a teenager. For some of our youth, having a summer job means earning money and providing real alternatives to gangs and violence,” said Governor Blagojevich. “Programs like this mean a lot for communities that are suffering from crime and increased violence– communities that need our help. The time for help is now.”

The Summer Youth Works initiative will begin in early July and run for approximately eights weeks, until Labor Day. The students will work under the supervision of community providers throughout the state, including those in communities throughout Chicago, Rockford, Decatur, East St. Louis/Alton, Pembroke Township, East Aurora, Alexander County, Venice, North Chicago, Danville, Springfield, Champaign, Peoria, Carpentersville, Elgin, Joliet, Savannah, Waukegan, North Chicago and Freeport. The Illinois Department of Human Services (IDHS) and the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) are coordinating the program. Participants who are 13 to 15 years old will work for 20 hours a week and receive a stipend of $250 at the end of their experience. 16 to 18 year old participants will also work 20 hours a week and earn $8 an hour. Youth ages 19 to 22 years old will work 25 hours a week and earn $10 per hour.

“My job during the school year allowed me to support my family, and if I were employed over the summer I could help even more. I also would like to gain job experience so that I can be a nurse when I grow up. I would like to thank the Governor for creating the program and creating opportunities for students like myself to get a job,” said Freya Enriquez who will enter her sophomore year at Christo Rey Jesuit High School this fall.

“IDOT is tremendously excited about the opportunity to harness the creativity and energy of so many young people and to put their talents to use in improving our transportation system and beautifying our communities,” said IDOT Secretary Milton R. Sees. “Having started out my career in the transportation field as summer intern for IDOT, I am keenly aware of how even one summer’s worth of experience can open up new horizons for a young person who is trying to chart a course for their future.”

Call for Increased Black Participation in Broadcast Opportunities
Recently FCC Commissioner, Michael Copps, declared that the state of Black media ownership was, well deplorable. In case you missed it, here's what Copps said during his speech at a forum held at the 10th Annual Wall Street Project Conference of Rainbow/PUSH on Jan. 9, 2007: "While people of color make up over 30 percent of our country's population..they own only 3.26 percent of all broadcast television stations...There has been no improvement in the level of minority ownership since 1998, even as the total universe of stations has increased by 12 percent...there has been a sharp drop in the total numbers of African-American stations since 1998--by 30 percent. This isn't just a problem. It's a national disgrace." Of equally alarming concern however is the advent of new media and lack of Black participation. As an attendee during this conference noted, "the media [should] be more broadly defined and not be limited to traditional TV and radio stations."
This is a urgent call from The A-List (http://thealistmagzine.blogspot.com) publishers to the FCC to increase Black media inclusion and economic power through new initiatives, formal policy and regulations. Our goal is to see not only increased Black television ownership by at least 10% by 2010, but also the creation and enforcement of regulations regarding policy on partnerships between mainstream media conglomerates and Black businesses (particularly new entrants in new media) as well as creation of an "incubator" to help launch new media business ideas. Since Black Americans, who as a whole support the media, exercise a spending power of $679 billion; it is now the era of balancing the investment to create a rich tapestry of diverse business inclusion, a tapestry which has made America great.

A new priest at his first mass was so nervous he could hardly speak.

Obama Supporters Across the Country Today

CHICAGO, IL – With just two days left until critical February 5th contests across the country, Obama campaign surrogates continued reaching out to voters to talk about Obama’s movement for change and why he’s the best candidate for the future.

On Sunday afternoon, Oprah Winfrey, Michelle Obama and Caroline Kennedy will come together to fire up Los Angeles voters at a GOTV rally on UCLA’s campus.

The free public event at Pauley Pavilion will help engage new voters and bring them into the presidential process.

In Alabama, actor Forest Whitaker will join with former Mississippi Governor Ray Mabus to Get Out The Vote at a rally in Birmingham. Governor Mabus will be visiting churches earlier in the day and will host a Birmingham Pre-Super Bowl Meet and Greet, while Whitaker will continue his day meeting with Montgomery residents at the campaign’s local headquarters.

General Scott Gration will host an event at the Warner Robin VFW in Georgia, before firing up supporters at the office in Macon. He will be joined in the state by Representatives Gwen Moore (WI) and GK Butterfield, as well as Dennis Archer, the former Mayor of Detroit. And in Memphis actress Kerry Washington will visit churches throughout the city before heading to Little Rock, Arkansas to kick off a canvass and an Obama Super Bowl Party.

In the Midwest, Hawaii Congressman Neil Abercrombie will reach out to voters in Bismarck, North Dakota before hosting a Super Bowl party in Dickinson. Representative David Loebsack (IA) will spend another day visiting with volunteers and supporters at campaign offices across Minnesota, and Senator Dick Durbin will host a Lincoln, Nebraska house party and a town hall in Omaha.

Many of us grew up watching the sitcom Living Single with Queen Latifah and wacky cousin Kim Coles. Well, let me tell you, this girl is as funny off the air, as she is on the air. I had the blessing and opportunity to work with the cast of the PocketBook Monologues at the SteppenWolfe Theater last week, and it was such a joyful experience.

Yes, she is certifiably funny, crazy and truly down to earth, just like you think she'd be!

Offering crazy make up tips and the whole nine yards. Every since she came on the scene, I always knew I'd get a chance to meet and interview her, I just didn't know when. That wasn't my concern. I put it out there, and the Universe made it happen. When you position yourself to be at the right place at the right time, anything can happen. So look forward to seeing her on ZTV and the Higher Learning Network!

I've been telling folks for years, b-t-s (behind the scenes) is where the real action is! You see, hear and experience things you never even imagined. I'm so happy to have had this privilege and to be able to share it with you. Go ahead and call your doctor to make an appointment ahead of time, because you're probably going to need stitches after you watch the joy!

Tips for an Exceptional, Superb & Powerful Life *
Take a 10-30 minute walk every day. And while you walk, smile. It is the ultimate antidepressant.
* Sit in silence for at least 10 minutes each day. Buy a lock if you have to.
* Buy a Tivo (DVR), tape your late night shows and get more sleep.
* When you wake up in the morning complete the following statement, "My purpose is to __________ today."
* Live with the 3 E's -- Energy, Enthusiasm, Empathy.
* Watch more movies, play more games and read more books than you did last year.
* Make time to exercise, practice meditation, yoga, Tai chi, etc.
* Spend more time with people over the age of 70 and under the age of six (not just people who ACT like they are over 70 or under the age of 6).
* Dream more while you are awake.
* Eat more foods that grow on trees and plants and eat less food that is manufactured in plants. * Drink green tea and plenty of water. Eat blueberries, wild Alaskan salmon, broccoli, almonds & walnuts.
* Try to make at least three people smile each day.
* Clear your clutter from your house, your car, your desk and let new and flowing energy into your life. ( I wish!)
* Don't waste your precious energy on gossip, energy vampires, issues of the past, negative thoughts or things you cannot control. Instead, invest your energy in the positive present moment.
* Realize that life is a school and you are here to learn. Problems are simply part of the curriculum that appear and fade away like algebra class.....but the lessons you learn will last a lifetime.
* Eat breakfast like a king or queen, lunch like a prince or princess, and dinner like a college kid with a maxed-out charge card (who doesn't have parents paying the bills).
* Smile and laugh more. It will keep the energy vampires away.
* Life isn't fair, but it's still good. * Life is too short to waste time hating anyone. * Don't take yourself so seriously. No one else does.
* You don't have to win every argument. Agree to disagree.
* Make peace with your past so it won't screw up the present.
* Don't compare your life to others'. You have no idea what their journey is all about.
* Go on and burn those "special" scented candles, use the 600 thread count sheets, the good china and wear your fancy lingerie now. Stop waiting for a special occasion. Everyday is special. * No one is in charge of your happiness except you.
* Frame every so-called disaster with these words: "In five years, will this matter?"
* Forgive everyone for everything.
* What other people think of you is none of your business.
* Hug at least one person per day!
